A blog full of unique handmade creations, by Frankie Leigh

Here are two of the final owls. I have two more waiting to be made, and then I’ll start on the bubba owls.

I got some lovely kitch fabric from ikea yesterday so planning on making a cushion for my new sofa at some point this weekend too.

It feels good to be back in the studio. Lots to do over the next few weeks!

Love xx

I have been back in the studio today making owls for the market next month. Here’s one of the owls getting its eyes!

The last few weeks have been fairly manic and I have neglected my poor studio. However I have a place on the St Peters Street market in Ipswich on 18th August, so I shall be making some new pieces for that. I will keep you updated as new items are created! Now that work is out for 6 weeks, I can really focus and get some stitching done.
I’m rather excited as this will be the first market that I’ve done, so I hope lots of you can make it down. It’s running alongside the maritime weekend event, so there will be lots to see and do!
I shall keep you posted over the next few weeks.

After a very grown up day yesterday of paying vets bills, rebuilding rabbit hutches and general house chores, I snuck up to my studio after I made dinner and made this cushion! It’s from an old strapless top I had. It took me about 3 hours to unpick the elastic and stitches at the top, but I think it was well worth it :) I love the print and now it is taking pride of place in my living room!

While I spend most of my free time from work making textile based creations, I actually studied photography at university. I am a bit of a happy snapper on my phone and I thought I would just share a few photos with you all now and again! These pictures were taken a couple of months ago at Aldeburgh; one of my favourite places to go and sit and soak up the lovely sea air.

I have also been practising with my free hand embroidery foot on my machine, to see if I could do some writing! These are my first three attempts. One thing I have discovered though, is that felt is much easier to free hand embroider on that cotton. I tried to put words on my 3D hot air balloon piece and it didn’t work as well. More practise needed I think!

I’m starting to play about for some ideas for a new project I’m going to be working on. I would quite like to make 3D textile pieces that could then be displayed in box frames. Here is a rough mock-up of how the pictures could be made. I included a picture mid way through of making, as sometimes it’s nice to go back and be able to visually review how I made a piece. It’s very rough, but I like the idea. I think I may have mentioned before that I am currently a little bit in love with hot air balloons, so expect to see more soon!!

I went to my first screen printing class a couple of nights ago and it was really good fun! This is what I managed to produce!! I realise it is very basic and not that great, but I was just so happy that it came out first time! Ive been looking into getting a mini kit for home as I want to start printing onto fabric and bags. Think I’ll need a bit more practise but it’s another new skill I’m on my way to learning.

I bought this gorgeous wool the other day off a lovely seller on eBay. It’s Shetland wool and has lots of colours woven through the main blue/grey. I have just started making it into a cushion cover. I will update with my progress over the next few weeks!
